About Leaston

A long and varied history

The first evidence of a settlement at Leaston goes back to the bronze age, but the lands of Leaston were first granted by King David I (1124 – 1153) in a royal charter to Simon Fraser. It may take its current name from Robert Leiston who lived here in 1500. The current house dates back to 1610, and the walled garden is assumed to have been built at the same time as it appears on the historic maps of the grounds. Many different families have lived here including Mr George Johnstone of Hanover Square, The Countess San Antonio and the chief of the clan Menzies in 1832. My family and I have lived here since 1980.

Today the Leaston Garden is a magical space where flowers grow and where there is time to stop and observe the simplicity and elegance of how they………. do just that.

What Leaston has taught me

This beautiful place has changed the way I look at the natural world. Leaston has taught me that there is so much more to life; that by opening your mind and focusing on the extraordinary and wonderful complexity of creation, you gradually learn how unimportant the worries and strife of daily human life are, and that by letting go and trusting in things working out, they somehow always do.
